How to Use Twitter

Why I Won’t Follow You Back on Twitter

by Alison Rothwell on 15 July 2009

Logo of Twitter
Automatically, that is…

I don’t subscribe to those automatic “follow back” pieces of software, I prefer to decide whether I follow peeps or not. If I’m not following you, this might be why…

  • Are you offering me a way to earn $10,000 a day, or recruit 10,000 Twitter followers in 24 hours? And that’s the only thing you ever talk about? I prefer not to be spammed!
  • Do you send Tweets out all the time asking for more followers? I am not a number….
  • Do you have a photo, or at least a logo on your Twitter page? Unless I know you IRL I like to follow people who I can picture. Same goes for having a website I can go and and have a gander at.
  • Have you said hello? Seriously, Twits who say Hi, join in a conversation or make a comment are the kind I like to follow. For me, Twitter is about conversation, about getting to know people and networking.

So, if I’m not following you, and nothing above rings a bell, then tweet me and jog my memory!

Where’s the # ???

by Alison Rothwell on 11 July 2009

P1000122Now I’m a pretty much paid up member of the “once you’ve had Mac, you never go back” squad, but with all my recent Tweeting I’ve had a puzzling predicament

Where’s the # ?

You see, my macbook, like the one in the pic on the left has no hash tag. Nada. I confess, I began by avoiding placing any hashtags on my Tweets, then it got more serious and I ended up copying and pasting for gawd’s sake.

Then, a long overdue google solved the mystery – the # hash tag on a Macbook is activated by pressing Alt + 3.

Crisis over.

The Truth About Mrs Slocombe’s Pussy

by Alison Rothwell on 2 July 2009

Oh dear, the tribute to the British comedy actress Mollie Sugden seems to have caused a bit of a stir out in cyberspace…

DiscoverCards on TwitterThere are already loads of companies using Twitter to “market” themselves in cyberspace, even Greggs, the makers of pies, pasties and other pastry items has got in on the act, tweeting for the very first time today!

I would have been none the wiser had it not been for @katebevan who found herself being followed  (stalked?) by the bakery. Her response made me snort my coffee:

@greggsthebaker actually, I loathe Greggs for selling disgusting crap that makes people fat. No idea why you’re following me! But welcome.

After tweeting Kate, I’ve worked out that @greggsthebaker must be using the Twitter search, as Kate tweeted to me

“I suspect it’s because I said Keira Knightley should eat a few pies a while back.”

So there you go, if you too want to be followed by Greggs, all you need to do is tweet “Sausage Rolls”, “Pasties” or “Chicken and Mushroom Pies” and you’ve got another follower under your belt – take note!

UPDATE – whoever has briefed the the Greggs Tweetmaster obviously forgot to say Twitter is all about building relationships! Here’s the rest of Kate and Greggs tweets:

Over to @greggsthebaker first

@katebevan we have healthy options too: http://is.gd/uiBz. So you think you’re too good for greggs eh? Snob.

Here’s Kate again:

@greggsthebaker God, how old are you, five? And if you can’t take the rough&tumble of the internet, don’t play with the big kids.

And then @greggsthebaker

@katebevan you started it.

Surely, this can’t be the REAL Greggs!

Further update still: It seems there are TWO Greggs in Twitterspace – @greggsthebaker (the rude one) and @greggsthebakers (who seems to be the legit one).
