Twitter, Twitter, Little Star #astronomy2009UK

by Alison Rothwell on 12 August 2009

Google Perseids 09 logoThe first “Twitter Meteorwatch” has just been launched. Budding astronomers are being urged to Tweet their experince of the meteor shower due in the skies today, the Perseids. Astronomers from around the world will also be live-tweeting images of the meteors, as well as pictures of the Moon, Jupiter and other celestial objects.
This “48-hour Twitter marathon” is part of the International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009).

Over here in the UK, the best times to see the Perseids are likely to be this morning (12 August) before dawn and from late evening on the 12th through to the early hours of the 13 August.

The UK’s National Trust has published online guides to seven top Perseid viewing sites, including coastal spots, nature reserves and national parks.

The Natural Trust’s seven best UK sites to view the meteors are

  • Stonehenge Landscape in Wiltshire
  • Black Down in Sussex
  • Mam Tor in Derbyshire
  • Friar’s Crag in Cumbria
  • Teign Valley in Devon
  • Penbryn Beach in Wales
  • Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve in Cambridgeshire

Twitter? No, Minister!

by Alison Rothwell on 28 July 2009

Twitter logoIs there anything more likely to make the heart sink than the news today that the Government recommends its departments to join Twitter?

It’s like buying a cool T-shirt and finding out your Dad’s got the same one at home – it doesn’t look right, but he still insists on wearing it…

Using Twitter is just not going to work. The report issued via the Cabinet Office suggests that Departments Tweet “issues of relevance or upcoming events” – and that these Tweets are decided after “quick discussions of potential tweets at daily meetings, as well as e-mails between officials and digital media staff about potential content for tweets.”

Oh dear. The fact that Twitter is supposed to be a two-way conversation, not a one-way street, seems to have passed them by. Add in the elements of Twitter that make it so unique – the spontaneity, the quick-fire banter and never has a communication channel been less suited to an organisation. What about Following? Who will decide who the departments should follow? And who will approve the Tweets – and approved they must be – like a news release, anything on Twitter is in the public domain as a government response. It’s an accident waiting to happen…
