Social Media Marketing in Chorley!

by Alison Rothwell on 24 April 2009

DSCN1650Social media marketing hit my home town Chorley this week when my local newspaper, the Chorley Guardian, announced its arrival on Twitter. So far, I’m wondering what exactly the team are planning to do, as since I’ve been following them (@Chorley_News) there’s not been an awful lot of tweets!

My two ‘penn’th would be to suggest that they link the website up to Twitter to get out a regular stream of local news. But this news encouraged me to look for fellow Chorley social media geeks using the Twiiter search – this uncovered the Chorley Citizen (local free newspaper), Chorley Borough Council, a couple of local Councillors, Chorley Little Theatre and Chorley FM (yes, it really does exist!), but not many others.

Twitter search is a really cool way to find people, places or just to locate the social media buzz – simply type in whatever you’re looking for in the search bar and you’re away!

Looking further into the numbers, 21 per cent of those surveyed plan to increase social media spending by 25 per cent or more, while only 3 per cent plan to shrink their budgets (34 percent responded “no change”).

Social Media Optimisation

by Alison Rothwell on 29 March 2008

Social media optimisation (SMO) is a way of getting publicity and website traffic through social media, online communities and community websites.

Examples of social media optimisation include adding a “Digg This” button, blogging, adding RSS feeds, and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos.

Social media optimisation is related to search engine marketing, but is different in several ways, primarily the focus is on driving traffic to websites from sources other than search engines such as google. However one benefit of successful SMO is undoubtedly the improvement in search engine rankings if done correctly.
