Social media optimisation (SMO) is a way of getting publicity and website traffic through social media, online communities and community websites.
Examples of social media optimisation include adding a “Digg This” button, blogging, adding RSS feeds, and incorporating third party community functionalities like Flickr photo slides and galleries or YouTube videos.
Social media optimisation is related to search engine marketing, but is different in several ways, primarily the focus is on driving traffic to websites from sources other than search engines such as google. However one benefit of successful SMO is undoubtedly the improvement in search engine rankings if done correctly.
