Be Careful Who You Add as a Facebook Friend!

by Alison Rothwell on 28 April 2009

facebook invite everybody Have you ever added someone as a friend on Facebook without knowing them?

I admit, that soon after joining Facebook, I did add someone – the name was a bit familar and I noticed she was also friends with a close friend of mine. So I blamed my memory, added her, and emailed my close friend for more details – only to be told that she had no idea who the new friend was, but had added her anyway!

At that point, it’s just too embarrassing to go back and email “Remind me again, who exactly are you?” So I quietly pruned her a few months back after she made no further contact with me after being added!

I was reminded of this by a news story at the weekend about a Swiss woman who lost her job after her employers noticed she’s been using Facebook after claiming to be too ill to use a computer. The woman denied she’s been using her computer and said she’d accessed Facebook via her Iphone. And astonishingly she suggested that her employers had created a fictitious Facebook persona who had become friends with her and then disappeared after she was fired…

Is Susan Boyle the First Social Media Superstar?

by Alison Rothwell on 19 April 2009

Twitter website screenshotOK, so maybe it’s a little premature to crown Susan as a superstar but I have been genuinely taken aback, not just by her incredible voice, but how quickly she’s become literally a “worldwide phenomenum.”

Just a week ago her regional round audition was broadcast on “Britain’s Got Talent” and now at the time of blogging, her appearance has been viewed 5 million times on Youtube.

She’s been endorsed via Twitter by Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher: He sent her a message saying: “This just made my night. Her entry read: “You saw it made me teary!”

The interest in her “across the Pond” I believe is unprecedented and can be attributed to Youtube, Twitter and the millions of blog posts her performance has garnered. Truly, whether Susan is the eventual winner or not, agents across the globe must be marking the power of social media with interest on behalf of their future charges.

by Alison Rothwell on 18 April 2009

likeaholix New Social Neworking Site Likaholix Likaholix is a new social sharing site currently in closed beta where you can “like” the things you like in life – such as books, people, films, etc.

Likaholix has a recommendation engine that will then recommend other things you might like.  You can then publish your “likes” to your FriendFeed, Facebook or Twitter account, and import your reviews from Amazon. In turn Likaholix can add friends from Gmail or Facebook.

Likaholix was created by two former Google employees so I recommend you grab an account and establish a  presence there – Grab your Likaholix Beta Invite here.

Why I’ve Changed my Twitter Name

by Alison Rothwell on 11 April 2009

The suspense is killing meI’ve been tweeting since 2007. Back then, I joined out of curiosity and just followed a handful of people I thought sounded interesting. Being new to Twitter, I just picked a username which was the brand name of one of my companies. Over the last six months Twitter has become the hottest web 2.0 application around and it seems just about everyone you meet has a Twitter account.

When I first joined Twitter, I didn’t really know what it was all about and what made Twitter different from all the other web 2.0 platforms. Since then, I’ve come to understand that Twitter is not about selling or even much about promotion. At its core are relationships and how can you have a real relationship with peeps, if they don’t actually know your real name?

So, grabbing my own Twitter name became as important a piece of the internetto me as my domain names. I dithered for a couple of months – thinking mistakenly that I’d lose my followers, or that people trying to find me would get lost in cyberspace, but a quick google gave me the solution. Now I have my username the same as the one I have IRL and my old username page able to redirect anyone who’s looking for me.

What is Social Networking

19 September 2008 Social Networking

Social Networking can be explained as the regular interaction of people for some common interest or cause. But as a marketing trend this concept is growing with [...]
