Social Networking can be explained as the regular interaction of people for some common interest or cause. Of course there is really nothing new about social networking, and it’s something many of us do every day offline, especially in the workplace or in schools. But as a marketing trend this concept is growing with popularity online.
This is because unlike”the real world”, cyberspace is filled with millions of people who are looking to meet other Internet users and develop both personal and business relationships.
There are lots of platforms for social networking on the web. Social networking websites are communities of Internet users that may range from small and tightly focused groups to enormous groups of people who all have varied backgrounds and interests.
So a Web 2.0 resource, or social networking site can exist on the basis of anything from religion, hobbies, politics, business, or education. And the idea behind getting involved in such a site is to meet new people who fit into one of two categories:
People who may have something you need.
People who may need something you have.
There’s a bit more to it than this of course but the above two categories basically sum up the entire purpose of participating in social networking and Web 2.0 systems. You might be looking for someone with the missing piece to your nearly completed Chinese recipe collection, or you could be searching for new customers for your niche business.
Whatever your aims are, the best thing to do is just get involved. Join some social websites and begin reading other member’s profiles, and perhaps get in touch with the people who meet the criteria of who you are looking to contact.
Social networking can also often involve grouping certain organisations or individuals together. So there are actually Web 2.0 platforms that are all about a specific hobby or interest whether it’s Cheshire canals or search engine optimization.
But while there are a number of social networking websites that are only concerned with specific interests, most do not. In fact the biggest and most popular social networking sites typically have a membership that’s open to every one.
This means that anyone can become a member, no matter what their views, beliefs, or hobbies are. However, once you are inside this online community, you can begin to set up your own network of friends and contacts; and eliminate those that do not meet your criteria.
