My Site in Cyberspace – Mamascarf

by Alison Rothwell on 20 July 2009

Mamascarf

Mamascarf

In the first of a series of interviews with online small business owners, we meet Keira O’Mara, who manufactures and retails Mamascarf, a unique breastfeeding cover.

Why I started a website
I decided to sell online as I knew this would be my first route to market with Mamascarf.  I was testing the market really as I didn’t know how successful my product would be and I knew that this was one of the most cost effective ways  to start.

I left decisions about website software to the experts so my website designer did all that for me as I was a bit clueless really.
I knew exactly what I wanted the website to look like, I had already designed the logo and knew that I wanted the website to have the same feel.  I had looked at lots of other websites and decided which aspects I liked in terms of structure and content. I think it’s important to keep it relatively simple when you are selling one product.

Toughest seo challenge
My toughest challenge stemmed from the fact that I was clueless about SEO and couldn’t afford to hire anyone to help.  For a search term that I had coined, “breastfeeding scarf” and none of my competitors use, I was only appearing on page 3 of Google.  All of the sites in front of me were selling Mamascarves but it was quite frustrating that they were all ahead of me.  By redoing my meta tags, page titles and amending my content I am now at the top of page 1!

I have only recently started blogging, so am not sure whether I have seen any benefits yet but hopefully I will soon as my blog is on my site.

I have been doing loads of social networking, mostly on Twitter which I have found invaluable (and enjoyable!).  The downside is that it takes time but its a great way to market your business.

What I like best about my website

The home page as it pretty much says it all.  I like the fact that all of the key bits of press have been included and think that if someone just looked at the home page it would give them a good idea about what Mamascarf is all about.

My top seo tip

I think (with my limited knowledge!) that the page titles and keywords are so important. Although my logo said “original breastfeeding scarf”, it wasn’t picked up my Google as it wasn’t text , so I had to make sure that it was also written in my text as well.  I think it is important to find the balance as you need to make sure that your website reads well and makes sense but at the same time contains everything it should to increase your Google ranking.
